Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) Symposium
Where does the vision to innovate come from?
What is the current state and future direction of the art market? These and other contemporary topics and issues are presented, discussed and debated by leading artists, speakers, forums and industry stakeholders. This year the Symposium will occur over two mornings kicking off with Friday’s Keynote Speaker, artist, performer and political activist, Destiny Deacon, speaking about the creation of her works in photography, video, installation and Performance Art. Destiny is a Melbourne-based Torres Strait Islander artist whose work has shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions of contemporary fine arts in Australia and overseas. In 2002 she was the only Australian artist to be chosen for the world’s top survey exhibition of contemporary art. Saturday’s Keynote Speaker is arts agent and author, Michael Reid. After a decade of arts industry experience with Christie's London and Australia, culminating with the opening of a major representative office for Christie's in Brisbane, in 1996 Michael went on for ten years to contribute weekly, as Art Market Analyst to the business section of The Australian newspaper. Following his News Corporation decade, Michael wrote weekly for five years, with the Sydney Morning Herald / The Age 'Good Weekend' newspapers’ magazine. The recent edition of his book How to buy and sell art contains a section specifically on Australian Indigenous Art. Michael will speak about where the future of the art market lies. One of Queensland’s rising art stars, Shirley Macnamarra, will present on how she makes art out of material abundant on her land yet deemed coming out of the poorest, most arid soils Australia has to offer – spinifex.
