The Rock ‘n’ Roll Spectacular
Featuring INNISFAIL’S FAVOURITE SINGING SONS
MICHAEL TURNER ex “Michael & the Mustangs” & BOBBY ANDERSON ex “Jaguars” & “The Squares”. On stage together for the very first time.
Also featuring JOHN SUES & TOM DUFFY The Two Original FIREFLIES
For the first time two of Innisfail’s favourite “singing sons” will be back home for one night, performing live in a Rock and Roll Spectacular at the Innisfail Shire Hall on Saturday 14th August.
Michael Turner, the former front man of “Michael and The Mustangs”, will be joined on stage by his lifelong friend Bobby Anderson, who was the lead vocalist and bass player in Innisfail band “The Jaguars”.
Also featuring at the newly refurbished Shire Hall are the original founding members of “The Fireflies”, John Sues and Tom Duffy.
After “The Mustangs” disbanded, Turner left Cairns in the seventies and formed his new band, “Michael Turner in Session” and performed regularly on GTK-TV and at the Sunbury Rock Festival. He also won the national final for male vocalists in Hoadley’s Battle of the Sounds, and currently performs in Brisbane where he now lives. He has also performed in recent years in Cairns and Innisfail as well as, at the annual Cairns Amateurs Members Party at the Tobruk Pool.
Bobby Anderson began his musical career as a guitarist/vocalist in Innisfail band “The Jaguars”, then decided to play bass guitar, for which he always had a fondness. A few years later he was invited to join Townsville’s top band ”The Squares” and became an accomplished bass player and vocalist, which subsequently led him overseas. He travelled the world with an Elvis tribute show performing in Hong Kong on the same bill as The Rolling Stones and Tom Jones. Bob is currently a member of the Sydney based band, “The Twilight Shadows”.
John Sues, guitar; and Tom Duffy, drums; founded Cairns first ever electronic guitar band, “The Fireflies”, in 1958 and continue to play together at functions in the region. They performed before a sell-out crowd of over 800 two years ago in Atherton to celebrate the Fireflies 50th anniversary of playing “rock ‘n’ roll” music. After trying for many years to faithfully reproduce the “Shadows sound”, made famous by the Shadows lead guitarist Hank Marvin, Sues finally achieved his 40-year dream and recently recorded a CD of his favourite Shadows hits, many of which he will feature during the evening.
Some of Australia’s finest rock musicians will also be on stage. David Lynch, who recorded and produced Sues’ CD in his Edmonton recording studio, will play lead/rhythm guitar along with legendary drummer, “Bluey” Morgan, and the multi-talented Ken Devine on keyboards and guitar.
The Fitzgerald Rotary Club will be operating a bar and providing finger food with profits going back into the Innisfail community.
