Cairns Indigenous Art Fair Opening Party

The ultimate art party in the tropics, the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair Opening Party is an exclusive chance to view and buy artwork before the Art Fair opens to the public on Friday 2O August. With dance and music, fine wine, fusion cuisine and a curator talk, the Opening Party is a celebration that lingers long in the memory.

Be welcomed with a traditional Yindinji smoking ceremony by the Traditional Owners of Cairns and marvel at the magnificent art for sale. Performers at this year's event include William Barton in collaboration with Kirtley Leigh Paine, the Gondwana National Indigenous Children's Choir, the Injinoo Dancers and Moses Warusam.

The Four Elements

In an international premiere, didgeridoo performer, William Barton joins violinist Kirtley Leigh Paine to premiere their composition. The artists intertwine the elements of wind, water, air and earth, portraying the common language music shares across all cultures and traditions, and highlighting the contrasts of their art forms.

William Barton

William Barton is one of Australia's most notable didgeridoo players, as well as a pioneer in the wider perception of his cultural traditions. He has appeared at most festivals in Australia, and has amassed an impressive roster of international appearances, from Edmonton to Honolulu, from Los Angeles to Vienna, from Spain to Japan, presenting the works of a number of Australian composers as well as his own original work for the didgeridoo. William was taught the didgeridoo by his uncle, an elder from the Waanyi tribe of north west Queensland. At eleven he became the leading didgeridoo player at traditional funerals and other ceremonies. In July 2001 he appeared at the Townsville International Festival of Chamber Music, performing in Peter Sculthorpe's From Ubirr: String Quartet No. 12 with the Goldner String Quartet. That appearance launched an extraordinary association between the young man and Australia's most revered senior composer. Sculthorpe has now included didgeridoo parts in several of his notable orchestral pieces. Visit William Barton's Website
